§66 what節の枠組み

外側

whatが作る従属節はほとんどが名詞節で、主語・動詞の目的語・前置詞の目的語・補語・同格のどれかの働きをする(小文字のwhatは名詞節を疑え)

内側

名詞→主語・動詞の目的語・前置詞の目的語・補語・同格

形容詞→名詞修飾

She is [what I consider refined. ]

Do you know [what his answer is?]

[What he had done] made his father angry. 

He showed the world [what seemed to us an age,] the lifeboat reached the drowning man. 

The sailors didn't know [from what country skills and jewels had originally come.]

< As Jackson senses the impact of [what he is saying] on the audience, > he speaks even more forcefully.
